The Orientation Checklist

For solo women over 40 — before you enter the fertility system.

"This is the checklist I wish I'd had before my first fertility consultation at 43. It is not medical advice, and it is not a coaching tool — just a calm overview of the non-medical things worth understanding before you enter the fertility system as a solo woman over 40."

Sarah, Solo Fertility 40s

Section 1 — Before You Speak To Clinics

Understand that fertility clinics are private businesses — this shapes the advice you receive
Know that a recommendation to use donor eggs is not always a medical verdict — clinics protect their success rate metrics
Understand that IVF in Europe is a legitimate option, not a last resort — and may make treatment across multiple cycles financially viable on one salary
Understand that the timing of treatment is a question for your doctor — based on your specific results, not general reassurance
Start tracking all clinic information in one place — you'll be doing this research alone
Understand that reassurance from a clinic is not the same as a treatment strategy

Section 2 — Before You Begin

Prepare for conversations about donor eggs — they are often a part of the conversation for women over 40
Build your support team before treatment begins — you won't have a partner navigating this alongside you
Know what support structures exist: BICA-registered fertility counsellors, peer communities, and independent guidance
Avoid fertility content designed for couples or younger women — much of it won't reflect your situation

Section 3 — Strategic Preparation

Budget for multiple cycles on one salary — going in without a financial strategy is one of the most common and costly mistakes
Consider whether IVF abroad offers better value without compromising on quality
Ask clinics about long-term treatment strategy — not just the next cycle
Understand what a second opinion costs — and why it may save you significantly more if you invest in the wrong clinic
Learn how clinics measure and report success rates — and why the headline figures can be misleading
Ask clinics which add-ons they recommend — and what the evidence base is for each (and check the HFEA website for further guidance)

Section 4 — Things You Do Not Need To Do Right Now

Assume donor eggs are your only option because one clinic said so
Commit to the first clinic you speak to
Assume you must treat in your home country — there are clinics around the world, though some countries don't treat solo women
Don't rely on forums or Facebook groups for medical information — misinformation is rife. If you want to research your treatment options, start with peer-reviewed sources such as the Cochrane Library
Make decisions from anxiety about running out of time — urgency is real, but decisions made from panic rather than information can be expensive

Not medical advice. This checklist covers the non-medical, logistical, financial, and emotional groundwork that should happen before you step into a clinic.

There should be something before the consultation.

Women who enter the fertility system without orientation — especially solo women over 40 funding treatment themselves — are more likely to make rushed decisions, choose clinics on impulse, and spend more than they planned. The system is not designed to slow down for you. Orientation before treatment is not a luxury. It is what makes the difference between decisions made from anxiety and decisions made from clarity.

That is why I created Solo Fertility 40s.
